The Agrifood chain is under pressure
Geplaatst op 28 oktober 2025The Agri-food chain is under great pressure: consumers, retailers, and governments demand transparency regarding origin, sustainability, and climate impact. Partly as a result, various parties within the food horticulture sector are on the way to securely, controlledly, and usefully sharing data using the BDI scheme of agreements, without losing control over their own information.
The central question being asked here is: what is the CO2 footprint impact of a tomato? Following the principle of 'think big, start small', the process begins with the trusted sharing of one unique data element in the chain: transport.

The required dataset is currently being defined and work is underway on the IT impact analysis. Implementation will start in January 2026. To ensure broad sector adoption, the project is being executed fully in line with the FreshProduce-PEFCR framework: the specific calculation method for unambiguously determining the environmental impact of fruit and vegetables.
The realisation of the PoC (Proof of Concept) aligns with the sector's ambition to become 'The First Sustainable Generation'. This is an initiative that proactively works on further sustainability in the food chain, and in which data and transparency are essential components. The active participation of companies confirms the usefulness and necessity.
