BDI joins the international Eclipse Dataspace Working Group as a strategic member

The Basic Data Infrastructure has officially become a strategic member of the international Eclipse Dataspace Working Group (EDWG). This membership marks an important next step in exploring new areas of common ground in the field of dataspaces and collaborating with other pioneers in this area.

The working group is part of the Eclipse Foundation, an organisation that facilitates global collaboration on open-source software and technical standards.

Within the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group, organisations encourage, develop and promote open-source solutions. These solutions support the development and use of dataspaces. In this way, the working group contributes to a broad ecosystem of dataspaces that can interoperate securely and reliably. This closely aligns with the ambitions of the Basic Data Infrastructure.

Focus on small, real-time messages
The BDI contributes knowledge and facilitates the exchange of expertise on the use of real-time messages. Many dataspace solutions focus on making complete datasets available and exchanging them. The BDI focuses on the continuous exchange of shorter messages: data ‘snippets’.

In practice, this involves the continuous exchange of small amounts of specific data. In a complex supply chain, for example, parties can share real-time notifications about delays instead of exchanging large, static datasets.

Consider a container that becomes available later than planned. Instead of sending a large data file, only the carriers, terminals and other supply chain partners involved receive a notification about the delay. They can then adjust their planning immediately. 

This way of working is known as event-driven data sharing. It offers a distinctive perspective and therefore makes a valuable contribution to the broader development of dataspaces.

Exchanging knowledge and practical experience
The BDI expects significant synergies within the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group. Through its membership, the BDI can exchange knowledge and practical experience, including expertise in continuous, event-driven data exchange. The BDI can also contribute to shared agreements and technical solutions. This will help BDI solutions interoperate more effectively with other dataspaces and software systems.
